We have just finished week 3 of session 2, and here's a quick rundown of what we have done this week! In civ this week, we focused more on the downfall of Rome, and in genre, we began recording parts of our speeches. Then, in the quest, we had super fun survival simulation challenges, which I will explore further.
Let's start with something I haven't mentioned: PD happens on Mondays and Wednesdays. On Monday, our trainer, Ben, came in, and we followed the written plan we had created with him. At the beginning of the session, we all figured out our PD goals; maybe it was to run faster or jump higher for volleyball. So, on Monday, we followed the workout plan and exercises we made, sometimes outside or right in our studio. Then, on Wednesday, we went to NVSA, a sports center, where we spent an hour playing all the different sports with Journey.
Here is a bit more about our civ. The two challenges we had were on Wednesday and Thursday. On Wednesday, we focused more on the assassination of Julius Caesar, why it occurred, and the aftermath. Then, on Thursday, we learned more about the fall of the Roman Republic and what caused it. After writing 250 words on one or two Socratic questions, we shifted over to Civ Circle and had our debate.
Now, genre, to quickly summarize what we're doing in this session, we are picking a historical figure we admire and recreating a speech they may have made. This week, we formulated our tagline, three main points, and call to action. On Monday, we started by learning about what makes a good call to action and brainstorming different ideas for our speech. Then, on Tuesday and Thursday, we started recording a few parts of the speech as a rough draft.
And now, quest. This week's quest was super fun, and two of the challenges we got to do were wilderness survival simulations. For one of the challenges, we were given a list of items; some examples would be a jug of water, a radio, or a mirror, and we were given a situation where we were stranded on a boat. Then, we had to rank all items in order, from which one is most to least important. We got to do this independently and then came back as a studio to figure it out. These challenges were super fun because we got to learn more about survival and also got to work as a tribe.
Last but not least, on Friday, we will have a super fun Alpine day. This will consist of team-building games with our house and fun! One of the games we will be playing is the five-way Capture the Flag between the houses.
In closing, this week was super fun. We made progress in our genre speeches while deepening our understanding of Rome's history in Civilization, along with some travel tips and advice in Quest. It's also great to see how everyone has made such progress with their NGAs, whether that's through deliberate practice, S&S interviews, or exploring deep books. Thank you so much for taking the time to read the weekly newsletter, and I’ll see you next week!
