Greetings Discovery families,
Week 5 has been a busy one in the Discovery Studio!
Newton’s Toy Workshop Quest continued this week with the classic egg drop challenge. Learners explored the concepts of elasticity and gravity and then used different materials to create structures to keep their egg safe during the fall. Many eggs survived! It was a very engaging and fun challenge.
In Writer’s Workshop learners are deep into writing their Hero’s Journey stories. They have been working with peers to review their story outlines and craft the best narrative that tells their hero’s journey story. Many learners have felt surprised by how many words they have written already. A few learners have shared excerpts of their stories in circle and gotten feedback from the group. It will be exciting to read the finished stories!
In Art this week our Art Committee planned a mask making challenge. We looked at videos from behind the scenes at the Lion King on Broadway to get a peek at how the professional masks are made for the show, and discussed if you would rather use your talents to make art for a wall or art that had a use. The learners then used art materials to make masks of animals.
In CIV the learners explored the seven wonders of the ancient world. They looked at the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and conducted research to form an opinion on if the famed hanging gardens truly existed. The learners then participated in a debate to assert and defend their positions.
In other news the learners have begun preparing for their Session 3 exhibition next week! They discussed what they would hope people who attended the exhibition might learn and then what activities they would want to plan. The learners came up with many suggestions, and ultimately decided on….. Well, if you want to find out you need to wait until the exhibition ;)
